Independent Adjudicators

The World Championships cannot run without quality independent adjudicators (IAs). In light of that we are very happy to announce the opening of the first round of IA applications. We are tremendously grateful to all of those who choose to apply for IA positions at Cape Town Worlds.

Below you’ll find details regarding the way the IA application process will work this year, as well as the link to the first round of application.

There will be three opportunities to apply:
Round 1: Tuesday April 24th – 11.59pm SAST Friday May 31st - *OPEN NOW*
Round 2: Saturday July 21st – 11.59pm SAST Tuesday August 21st
Round 3: Monday September 17th – 11.59pm Friday SAST October 19th

We would encourage applicants to apply early since we intend to allocate up to 50% of the funding in round 1, up to 90% of funding in round 2 and up to 100% of our IA budget in round 3.

Applicants will be emailed with the results of their applications approximately two weeks after the end of each round. An application’s outcome can be in one of four broad categories:
1. No attendance – owing to capacity constraints, the applicant will not be able to come to WUDC as an Independent Adjudicator, even if they pay all of their own costs. They will still be able to attend as an institutional adjudicator.
2. No funding – the applicant will need to pay all registration fees and all their travel costs in full.
3. Registration waiver – the applicant will not need to pay the full (or potentially any) registration fee, but will need to pay all their travel costs.
4. Travel subsidy + registration waiver – the applicant will not need to pay any registration fee, and will receive a (full or partial) subsidy towards their travel costs. Subsidies will be paid in person at WUDC, and receipts will need to be provided to the Finance team for all travel expenses requiring reimbursement.

For those offered travel subsidies, all subsidies will be distributed in Rand. We are denominating and distributing subsidies in Rand because registration fees have been paid in Rand. We will ensure ease of conversion to USD at the tournament.

The application consists of a Google Form (link below), and should take 30 minutes. The form comprises four short sections: personal information, judging experience, debating experience and a multiple-choice test. Applicants should follow the instructions on the form, and reach out to with any questions.
